Hello again! This diorama is inspired by one of my favorite series: Fallout. Matt over at Simple as War has been posting his updates on his awesome looking Fallout board which inspired me to finally put to use some bits that I’ve been collecting for just such a purpose.
This was a really fun build; I enjoyed finding random bits that I could turn into scattered details in the scene. The computer is a bit of sprue cut and glued on top of a piece of popsicle stick to form the keyboard. The barrels are screws I had laying around. And building at this scale is a nice way to save room on my shelf
The figures are Caesar miniatures 1/72 scale Modern Militia. I swapped torsos, legs, and heads to get decent poses for the scene. Painting these slightly smaller figures was interesting. They’re not super well done but I really like how they turned out. I had already painted the vault dweller when I decided he could use some leather armor. So I had to add greenstuff on top of the already painted figure. The running figure looked a bit plain so I made a gas mask out of greenstuff. Working with greenstuff is not my strong suit so i’m surprised I was able to make such a tiny thing and have it turn out okay
I have more stuff in the works now. Some of which are inspired by other games I love. And of course more Dark Souls dioramas are coming up

Here is the latest thing i’ve completed; The Undead Parish. This should be a familiar spot for anyone who’s played Dark Souls. In this section of the church you’ll find an elevator. If you’re like me, you were terrified when you first entered, the gate closes, and you start a descent into the unknown. Fortunately this turns out to be one of the most useful early game shortcuts back to Firelink Shrine. Hooray!
With this diorama I tried a few things that are relatively new to me; I wanted to attempt to create more small details to help set the scene, and I also finally had a shot at painting old rusty armor. Since most of the enemies that you encounter early in the game are Undead it is only fitting that their equipment be old and worn out looking. I may have gone too far with the rust effect on the Balder Knight but I’m glad I gave it a try.
Carried on the knight’s back is the East-West shield, a battered wooden shield with a great design on it. I did not do it justice, but I wanted to try something different than the usual Knight’s shield that I have done in the past. The Estus flask on his belt is made by a small bead and a bit of plastic on top for the neck of the bottle.
I’m very happy with how this scene turned out. I’ve been making these all from memory for the most part, and I think I captured the feel of this section of the Parish. To start I created a general layout with some foam to figure out the spacing, then cut out the stairs, doorways, glued sections down, and added on more structures as needed.
One of the things I’m glad I tried was the bookshelves. I saw this method online where you just wrap construction paper around one side of a popsicle stick or foam, glue It, then cut out the shapes of books. I used some old business cards and construction paper.
The Balder Knight was created from an armored skeleton figure made by Reaper Miniatures. Snipped the arms off and repositioned them, gave him a sword and new shield, then added some greenstuff for a cape and some shape for added armor.

Hey everyone, sorry for the silence for the past couple of months. Life has been busy between work and moving apartments, plus some other excuses and stuff.
Anyway, the latest piece I finished is Andre’s shop located in the Undead Parish. After my first long and grueling run through the Burg and Parish I was beaten down and low on health. In the distance I heard a rhythmic hammering sound. Being on edge, I cautiously made my way forward to find the source of the sound. At the bottom of a few flights of stairs I found one of the first characters that didn’t try to kill me. Andre the Blacksmith.
I was a little out of practice while building this one. I just sort of went into this without planning anything or thinking much through. So this was a quick build but maybe didn’t turn out as good as I would have hoped. I’m still very happy with it, and it looks good with my small collection of other scenes from Dark Souls.
The Andre figure is the first miniature that I could find at the shop that looked somewhat correct. I actually painted him up ages ago when I first started getting into this hobby.
I took fewer work-in-progress photos this time. Not sure if that’s good or bad.

This is my fourth full diorama. We’re still in the undead burg, just a short distance ahead of where we left off. The scene shows a pyromancer, fireball at the ready, entering a room filled with hollow warriors. I decided to do another scene in the burg because I felt that I needed some practice making structures. I have been dreading my first attempt at making an actual building with walls, but with a strong enough foam-safe glue it was surprisingly easy. I didn’t exactly measure anything, and I was mostly working off of memory of how this area looks so there are some structural differences. I also added some extra furnishings that aren’t in the area in-game, to keep things looking more interesting for the diorama.
I’m quite happy with how this turned out. It was a lot of fun adding the little details to this scene, and I look forward to making more interiors in the future. The arched windows were cut out of foam by tracing the lid of a bottle of paint, and that’s about the extent of ‘measuring’ that I did on this. I spread some glue in certain areas on the walls and put down some brownish green flock, and then went over that again once it dried with some lighter green fine flock. I think this gives a decent enough mossy effect to everything
As usual I took a few work-in-progress photos while I was making this, in case anyone is interested to see that. In the photo with the miniatures you can see the (somewhat goofy) face that I painted onto the pyromancer. This is the first time I’ve attempted to paint facial details and I’m actually pretty happy with how it turned out.

Not ready to leave the Burg yet. I have been repeatedly trying and failing to convert a Minotaur figure into the Taurus Demon. Which sort of echoes my many failed attempts to kill him in the game when I first played. So much like on that first playthrough I have put that on hold for now to revisit the Burg.
Just a preview of what’s coming soon. I have finished building everything for this diorama and all that’s left is painting. Which always takes a long time for me. But I’m hoping to have the finished product ready very soon depending on my schedule
Just finished work on my third diorama – A scene from the Undead Burg. My first time through this area was tough. I remember having a particularly hard time trying to manage fighting soldiers in the lower level as a hollow with a crossbow shot at me from above. This served as inspiration for this piece.
I haven’t really tried painting faces yet and I just knew I would end up with some goofy looking figures if I tried so I just used a wash to add a bit of depth to the faces. I think it works well enough for now.
The Undead Burg area consists largely of elevated rooftop areas so I tried to add some height to this diorama to reflect that
When making things I tend to just start making cuts in foam and get rough shapes for what I need. I don’t really measure anything, so things may not fit together very cleanly. But I’m happy with how it looks. I only had a rough idea for what I wanted and just added on as I went. I had actually completely finished the top half but then I started thinking it could use a little bit of height to sell the ‘rooftop’ vibe. So the lower half was quickly put together as the last step.

Here’s another small piece. The chosen undead’s first meeting with Solaire of Astora, where he gives the player the white sign soap stone.
The figures are Perry Miniatures bits, chopped up and converted as necessary, and a bit of greenstuff to add some extra details

Here’s a small piece I made. The elite knight is a Perry figure that I added a coat and straps onto using Milliput. I’ll probably need to get better at using this stuff in order to make things look a little closer to Dark Souls
Here’s the second diorama I’ve made. Inspired by my first real mistake in Dark Souls. I spent more time than i’d like to admit running into the graveyard and getting destroyed by skeletons until i realized there was another way to go. The armor on the knight is roughly inspired by the hunter starting armor.
I worked on this on and off for a couple of weeks, a few hours a night. Made some mistakes, learned that I should probably plan a little bit before I start gluing things in place, and had some fun learning to paint skeletons.
The nice thing about the skeletons (Reaper Bones resin figures) is that they’re soft plastic; so with a knife and a little patience you can cut these guys to bits and reposition them into different poses.
To make the landscape of the diorama I just used some blue insulation foam and dollar store foam board to get the general shape.
Used more foam for the grave stones, and some wire to make the tree.
I covered the tree and the landscape in a thin layer of air dry clay and painted it all up
I wanted the feeling of a cramped graveyard like in Dark Souls. In the end it looked a bit too cramped maybe, but I’m satisfied with everything overall.
